A 100-year success story
The history of the company began in 1912, when Julius Behr and Albert Ruprecht, from whose family name BE-RU was derived, founded a company for spark plugs in Ludwigsburg. However, it was not until 10 years later that they really made a name for themselves with the development of the world's first glow plug for starting cold diesel engines. The patent granted in 1931 for the bipolar glow plug with replaceable wire filament also ensured additional fame. Interrupted by the Second World War and the death of company founder Albert Ruprecht, the company's success story only continued 40 years later when it succeeded in reducing the preheating time of diesel engines to 20 seconds with a ‘fast’ glow plug. In 1989, the ignition coil was added to the product range of the Swabian manufacturer. Innovations such as the first electronically controlled diesel quick-start system and an innovative pressure sensor glow plug technology followed between 2001 and 2009. In 2009, BERU is taken over by the American company BorgWarner and renamed ‘BorgWarner Beru Systems’. The latest innovation in the product range is the production of iridium spark plugs, which started in 2017.
